Ashtabula was great as a child, but fast forward 30 years and you can find yourself working for China in one of the several factories or giving the harbor residents cancer with chemicals from the plants being that close to the lake. Section 8 is abundant - meaning so are the drugs, crime, and death. Police presence is heavy and even some of them are criminals. I was born there and am so glad I'm out of there. Tent city is at the gulf. There are outdoor activities, sure unless its winter, then there's drugs or booze. Everyone knows and gossips about each other on the local criminal activity (nosy neighbor) fb page. Car accidents are abundant with very little traffic. If negative stars were optional, I'd give it -5 out of 5 of places I've lived and would rather live in.

Ashtabula has been slowly developing economically. The tourism industry is soaring, and there are many nice food and coffee establishments. A new hotel is being built in the harbor, and a $474 million facility is being built, adding 110 permanent jobs with an estimated need for another 300 local jobs for support.

The people that say good things about Ashtabula are either lying or too stupid to know any better. The educational system is the worst part. Nothing to do for anyone. No restaurants, no activities, even the bowling alleys are closed. The lake is not utilized at all, the geese poop all over the place. And as people said the roads are in disrepair. There are no stores and no jobs. It is a ghost town at best.
The city government only like to fight each other for more power, they do nothing to improve the city. I grew up in the city and it was a joke 40 years ago. It has only gotten worse as people move away for opportunities. All that is left is leaders without a vision, desire, or ability to make meaningful changes. The location is great right on the lake with roads leading to other places. The only thing the city is known for is the greatest railroad disaster in the history of the USA, and for a poor unfortunate athlete that died from taking steroids to improve his life.
