Freaky Friday 2 In Talks With First New Cast Member In Lohan & Curtis' Disney Sequel (2024)

Freaky Friday 2 is getting close to adding its first new cast member. The movie is the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 Mark Waters comedy, which was the third adaptation of the 1972 Mary Rodgers novel of the same name about a mother and daughter switching bodies, after the 1976 original starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris and a 1995 TV movie starring Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann. The upcoming Freaky Friday 2 is set to feature the return of the stars of Waters' version, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Nisha Ganatra taking over as director.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the first new cast member is about to join the returning stars of Freaky Friday 2. The 15-year-old actor, Julia Butters, is reportedly in talks to board the movie, though the character she would be playing has not yet been specified. It seems likely that Butters will be playing one of two teenage girls with whom lead characters Tess and Anna Coleman are reported to be swapping bodies in the new movie, namely Anna's daughter and future stepdaughter.

The Young Star Already Has Several Prominent Titles Under Her Belt

If the teased Freaky Friday 2 story about a four-person swap turns out to be true, then Butters' role will be massively important to the new movie. It makes sense that the team behind the project would be approaching teenage actors with ample experience to properly play off against the seasoned returning performers. Butters has a robust resume that proves her quite capable of holding her own against prominent actors, which makes her a solid fit for the role.

The young star is perhaps best known for playing child actor Trudi Frazer in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, a character who has a meaningful one-on-one scene with Leonardo DiCaprio's Rick Dalton. Although she wouldn't appear in another movie for three years, she followed up that role with two big roles in 2022, starring opposite Ryan Gosling in the Russo Brothers' The Gray Man and a cast that included Michelle Williams and Paul Dano in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans. At the time of writing, Butters already has a full decade of on-camera acting experience. This almost exactly matches Lohan's own level of experience at the time she made the original 2003 movie, as one of her first onscreen gigs was an uncredited role as a trick or treater on a 1992 episode of Late Night with David Letterman. It remains to be seen if Butters officially boards Freaky Friday 2, but if she does, it may be difficult to find her another teenage co-star who has the same breadth of experience.
