My speed has fallen and it can't get up!

I upgraded to DSL Pro package 1.5-3Mbps/384Kbps and it was activated over a month ago. I have the SpeedStream 060-5360-123, an HP PC and run Windows ME. Connect using Enternet 300. Use Norton Personal Firewall. My speedtest results were blazing at 2.5Mbps and 300+Kbps for weeks and I was lovin' it!

Then all of a sudden, last week, it dropped like a rock. Now it is 216Kbps/250.78Kbps (Yes, downloads are slower than uploads.)

I've tried everything I know, including several of the tips I've read here. Cycled modem, rebooted. Checked filters. Checked for interference. Unchecked/rechecked "automatically detect proxy settings" in IE, forced rebuild of driver database, and I forget what else. Nothing.

I called 1-877-SBC-DSL5, but the support person said it is because my PC is running with only 70% free resources and it needs to be at least 75%. She wouldn't help me beyond that. But, that wasn't a problem back when I WAS getting 2.2Mbps, so I don't get it.

I am not a big "techie". Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Check the spyware.

I have up-to-date Spybot and Adaware. Got rid of everything identified (not much), including cookies.

I could be wrong, but the "detect proxy settings" in IE should remain unchecked and blank, although it would affect your connection status more than your speed. Possibly check your filters, see if maybe one of them went bad, or if your using something like a 50+ft phone cable.

I agree that "detect proxy settings" should be unchecked, and that's what it is now. It HAD always been checked even when I got the higher speed - didn't seem to cause any problems. Only reason I bothered checking was because when my speed dropped I started getting "detecting proxy settings". Not now. Just slow speed.

I have about a 12' line to jack where line enters house. Again, no change in that, and I was getting 2.2Mbps for weeks. I have 3 filters in use, and had three extras. So, swapped them all, cycled modem and PC. No change. Nothing I am aware of has changed in the environment(appliances, etc./hardware.)

I just shoved my computer desk across the room so I could swap in a spare 6' line I had for the 12' line. Rebooted, cycled modem. No change. 216Kbps down. The DSL gods do not like me. My speed has fallen and it can't get up! - AT&T Midwest (1)

If the spyware makes such a difference in download speed, what is the best anti-spyware software to use?

I think you have the spyware end taken care of with the two programs you mentioned.
Really spyware is going to affect your UP more than your Down as it is hard to spy on you by downloading information to your computer.

I would put my money elsewhere.

You can try something like the "live" cd here: »www.knoppix.org/
It will eliminate the possibility of spyware being the cause.
This will run strictly off the cd and not touch your HDD so you don't have to worry about killing your windows install.

peace

I have posted this problem to the SBC Direct forum. Sporty883 tested line and it looks AOK. He also cleared and rebuilt router settings. Suggested that I remove AOL installation and disable my firewall temporarily and retest using DSLreports speed tests.

Will let ya'll know what I find out.

Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions to this point!

I feel for people that even bother to call this number. How is the sync on your modem, do you lose sync (connection, the broadband light flashes/goes out on modem)? Are your filters on correctly? If your modem has a log, can you check and see if it gives you a sync rate reading. Sounds to me like your computer is OK if you don't have any spyware and if your Proxy settings are OK.

I would definatley remove aol software. I've never investigated it thoroughly, but there is one certain computer that was just running slowly, and opeing pages slowly. I removed anything by aol, and installed the standalone aol messenger. It worked great.
I was there again a few days ago, the kids put the aol "stuff" back on and the general performance is sluggish again.
They say yes, the heads are going up and down, I swear I won't clean it up again, but they do it anyway..hmm

Spybot S&D is free and works great. Again, I have not investigated, but I don't run it in the background. Just use it to Search and Destroy bandwidth sucking spyware.

Get rid of the ME. Spend the $99 and upgrade to XP. Then ditch all the sbc yahoo software, including the 300. Use the xp wizard to connect. Just my 2 cents !

Absolutely. One thing about spybot is that you have to select expert settings for everything on install or they won't be available from the desktop. However, if you open the exe in program files, they are available. ;0

As far at this thread, if it were my computer, I would go to control panel, add/remove programs and get rid of all enternet/ aol or anything else like that. Any kind of helper is helping themselves, any kind of search assistant is assisting itself.

After that, I would just create a connection without any assistance from enternet. Of course, if you have the 5100B the procedure is different.
But the point is, get rid of all that software and create a new connection. There are plenty of ppl here that will assist in doing that. Even on ME, My speed has fallen and it can't get up! - AT&T Midwest (10). Otherwise, it looks like this is turing into a computer issue, which is always wise to address first in a sichiation such as this.

I am having the EXACT same problem! I upgraded like 2mos ago. If I remember correctly, was getting about 780kbps down and 150kbps up and then I switched to the DSL Pro package and now I'm getting about 320kbps down and 350kbps up! Wierd. I called SBC Yahoo DSL 5 number and they said it all checks out. Nothing changed except my package. I've removed my firewall, router, switched DSL modems, new phone line, ethernet cables, checked settings, checked spyware, leave modem on 24/7, not next to monitor, no long cables, different phone jacks, different/no filters. I'm confident that problem is not my end. Not getting any connection problems, just slow. What to do?

Sporty883 in SBC Direct nailed it. It's Norton Personal Firewall!!!

Disabled:
Your Throughput
Download = 2.094 Mbps
Upload = 329.76 kbps

Enabled:
Your Throughput
Download = 218.59 kbps
Upload = 282.08 kbps

Off we go to the firewall forum ...

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I am so happy I could just ... well, upgrade to premium ... Oh, I just did! Ten bucks well spent!

Eh, interesting.
I would try getting zone alarm, free and takes up a lot less resources than the last norton firewall I tried out.
I have heard that it has gotten a bit strange lately, but for your OS you would do better with an older version anyway.
2.6 should do just fine for you.

You can find it here:
