Zap is the combat nickname for Euclid native Ronald J. Zlatoper, a four-star full admiral in the Navy and a former combat pilot. He received the nickname when other pilots over North Vietnam found it easier to pronounce than his real name.
On Aug. 6, Zlatoper, 52, will take command of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, including all naval operations in the Pacific Ocean, a Navy spokesman in Washington said yesterday.
