55 OBITUARIES Union-News, Friday, J.9.96 Maxine Grogan Day, ex-town official, at 93 MONTAGUE Maxine G. Day, 93, formerly of 33 Worcester Turners Falls, a former town official, died Wednesday at Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. She worked formerly for Griswoldville Manufacturing Co, at Turners Falls, and the late William G. Clark, a local attorney. She also was the secretary to the I treasurer of the former New England Box and secretary to the dean of admissions at Deerfield Academy.

She was the clerk to the town's of Assesors for 10 years, and in 1954 was appointed secretary-executive director of the Montague Housing Authority. She retired in 1973. A native of the town, she attended Turners Falls schools, and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumpction Church.

She was a former president of the -Solomon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Auxiliary and the Greenfield Emblem Club. She was a former corresponding sec- Obituaries retary for the Turners Falls High School Alumni Association; a past secretary-treasurer of the Democratic Town Committee; a former chairwoman of the United Fund Drive, and a former committeewoman of the Franklin County Business and Professional Women's Club. She was the widow of George Foster, and Walter F. Day, who died in 1967. She leaves a sister, Anna Day of West Roxbury; a stepdaughter, Virginia Nelson of Turners Falls; nieces and nephews, including Barbara Grogan of Rowe, who helped care for her, and grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be on Monday morning at McCarthy Funeral Home and St. Mary of the Assumption Church, with burial in the parish cemetery, all in Turners Falls. A calling hour will precede the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity. at 'F.

Alta G. Deso MONTAGUE Alta G. (Gelinas) Deso, 90, formerly of 82 Turnpike Road, Turners Falls, died Wednesday in a Greenfield nursing home. She was a spinner at the Kendall Mills in Colrain for many years. A native of Monroe, she attended the Houghton School in North Adams.

She moved to Turners Falls later, and was a communicant of St. Anne's Church. Her husband, William Deso, died in 1976. She leaves a son, William of Millers Falls; four sisters, Exilda Beauchamp of Adams, Rose Walczake and Viola Harvey of Clarksburg, and Elvina Schonfelder of Cheshire; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and two great-greatgranchildren. Zeda M. Bixby BELCHERTOWN Zeda M. (Chaffee) Bixby, 84, formerly of Jabish Street, died Thursday in a South Hadley nursing home. She was an elementary school teacher in Barnet, many years ago.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a graduate of the Lyndon Normal School (now Lyndon State College) in Lyndonville, Vt. She spent many years in Springfield, and attended the Wesley United Methodist Church. She was its Christian education coordinator for 10 years. She moved here in 1979, and worshipped at the Hope United Methodist Church. Her husband, Chester Bixby, died in 1992.

She leaves a son, Russell of Brimfield; a sister, Anne Bachelder of Lyndonville, and three granddaughters. A memorial service will be conducted on Aug. 17 in the Hope United Methodist Church. In Loving Memory Joseph J. Piepul Piepul's Camera Center Inc. Ruth A. Nassif Ruth A. (Vrooman) Nassif, 88, formerly of 105 Chestnut Lane, a retired registered nurse, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

She worked at the former Wesson Women's Hospital and Baystate Medical Center, both in Springfield, and was later a charge nurse at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home. She was a volunteer at the Public Library, and for the Red Cross bloodmobile. Born in Cumming. ton, she was a graduate of Drury Iligh School in North Adams. She also was a graduate of Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y., a and received a nursing degree from the Yale University School of Nursing.

She moved here later, and attended the Agawam Congregational Church. She was a Loaves and Fishes volunteer. Her husband, Philip Nassif, died in 1973. She leaves three sons, Peter T. of Brookline, Philip G.

of Sunderland, and Jeffrey P. of Agawam; a daughter, Julie A. Nassif of Agawam; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Sept. 7 in the church, with burial in Center Cemetery.

Marjorie Bodendorf, ex-zoology professor ACTON Marjorie (Hyett) Bodendorf, 60, of Acton, and formerly of Westfield, died Thursday at Symmes Hospital in Arlington after a long bout with breast cancer. She was a zoology professor at Mount Holyoke College in 1 South Hadley in 1957-60, and the following year taught biology at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley. She also substitute-taught at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School.

Born in' Cardiff, Wales, she was a 1957 graduate of the University of Cardiff. She lived in Westfield, Germany, Roseville, and Oklahoma City, before settling here. She attended the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, and sang in its choir. She also was a volunteer in the Acton schools. She leaves her husband, Bruce Bodendorf; a son, Andrew of Alexandria, her mother, Olive (Gordon) Hyett of Porthcawl, Wales; five brothers, Roy, Frank, Stanley, Eric, and Robert of Cardiff.

A daughter, Breta A. Bodendorf, died earlier. The funeral will be Monday morning in the church, with burial at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Westfield in the afternoon. Calling hours are set Sunday afternoon and evening at Acton Funeral Home.

(Boyles) Brown, 84, of Belleville, and formerly of South Hadley, died here on Tuesday. Born in Oklahoma, she lived in South Hadley for many years. She worshipped at the United Methodist Church of South Hadley and Holyoke, Mass. Her husband, William T. Brown, died in 1988.

She leaves three brothers, Fred of Thousand Oaks, H. Clyde of Bellflower, and Mattie J. Ennis of Redding, grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and great-great-granchildren. His wife, the former Margaret Savides, died in 1978. He leaves a son, Paul D. of Southwick; three daughters, Donna Kendall and Nancy McGough of Ludlow, and Joann Broussard of Kirbyville, Texas; a sister, Agnes Gallerani of Springfield, and five grandchildren.

Hoffer, 43, of 195 Ripley Road died Tuesday at horne. He was a construction worker for 12 years. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, he lived in New York City. He was a 1971. graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, and attended Hunter College in Manhattan, N.Y.

He' moved to Grass Valley, in the mid-1970s, returned to New York City in 1984, and came here last year. He was a foundinger and leader of New Moon New York, an alternative spiritually networking organization. He leaves his wife, the former Laura A. Wildman; his parents, Daniel Hoffer of New York City and Frida (Wucherpfening) Hoffer of Dingmans Ferry, a brother, Victor Sutter, and sister, Eva Sutter, of New York City. A memorial service will be conducted on Aug.

18 in St. James's Chapel at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. A private memorial service is planned for Aug. 24 at the decedent's home.

She worked previously at the former Ames Worsted Co. She was a lifelong resident. Her husband, Daniel H. Anctil, died in 1977. She leaves three sons, Daniel R.

Cosgrove, she had been a Wallingford resident until moving to Chicopee 15 years agao.

She Was a 1968 graduate of Mercy High School in Middletown, and was graduated from the MeridenWallingford Hospital School of Nursing In 1971. A Registered Nurse, she had held a variety of nursing positions in the Hartford-Springfield area, having been on the psychiatric nursing staff of the institute of Living In Hartford, and as a nurse for the U.S. Postal Service in Springfield. She currently served on the staff at The Children's House in Springfield, and was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church in Chicopee.

Besides mother, she is survived by her son, Christopher Thomas Brayley of Chicopee, her two sisters, Sister Christine grove O.P, of New York City, and Marguerite C. Cosgrove of Wallingford, her two brothers and sisters-in-law, Stephen A. Cosgrove and Jeanie Cosgrove of Chicopee, and Thomas M. Cosgrove, Jr. and Dena grove of Higganum, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uricles, and cousins.

He was born in Feeding Hills, MA on February 20, 1919 and lived in Western Massachusetts until 1995 when he became a resident of Pelican Bay, Naples, Florida. He served in the 304th Station Hospital Unit in the United States Army during World War Il, honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. He returned to Feeding Hills after the war and established a furniture and appliance business, owned several rental properties in Springfield and in the towns of Eastham and Falmouth on Cape Cod, operated a laundramat and cleaners In West Springfield. In 1976, Joseph was forced into retirement by the disabling effects of Scleroderma. Mr.

Morieb is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elaine Nicpon Marieb, a daughter Pamela Marieb Mosler and two grand; children, Joseph and Shanna of San Jose, California, brother, Frederick Marieb of Feeding Hills; two sisters, Eva Marieb of Springfield, and Freda Caserio of Longmeadow and several Nieces and Nephews. A gentle, generous man, he will be remembered with love by all who knew him. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Satur. day, August 3.
