Whereas The Court Jester was genius on every way, The Vagabond King was exactly the opposite and pouring out a lack of interest in every field. Them starting to sing was annoying rather than appealing.

After wanting to see this for years, I'm sorry to say this is just "okay."
It makes me sad that this was Kathryn Grayson's last film - and she was the only one trying in the film, though they didn't give her much to do.
Oreste never should have been cast.

"This tavern wench speaks the truth."

Weird. That's what it says on my business cards.

Why is TCM airing a 4:3 version of this when it's a 1.85:1 Vistavision print?

  • Review by Aurora ★★★

Not sure why so few people have seen this. I guess it's a pretty heavily altered adaptation of an operetta I'd never heard of, and the songs are pretty dumb but idk, Rita Moreno gets to dance around in a swirly technicolor skirt, I'm not complaining.

Rita Moreno playing the second rate girlfriend does not sit right with me

  • Review by Luka ★★

Strong contender for Curtiz's worst movie. Somehow it's even worse than the 1930 version, which is already mediocre in the first place. The singing is the only decent element, everything else is almost laughable, particularly the cheap sets.

  • Review by Brian Burkart ★½

Yikes. How far had Michael Curtiz fallen to have to direct this cheap looking operetta about Louis XI of France drafting the popular "king" of criminals to fight against usurpers to the crown. The whole production appears to be a misfire.

Kathryn Grayson retired after making this film. Spending the rest of her career on stage with the occasional TV appearance. The leading man, Oreste Kirkop, did not speak any English so his speaking voice was dubbed. The voice they chose is totally at odds with his deep, sonorous singing baritone. Worse, the two stars did not get along at all during filming. In the finished film it appears that hey are tolerating each other instead of falling in love.…

  • Review by laurenhowie ★★

I didn't feel like the two main characters' singing voices meshed well together. Interesting story but a little sad. Rita Moreno is always fun to watch though.

  • Review by Brian Lindsay

A garish palette and cartoonish costumes can neither obscure the artificial production design nor distract from the thin plot and bland songs at the heart of this dated operetta. It’s a swirl of colour and sound that remains defiantely lifeless and uninvolving, providing no romantic adventure and sparking no cinematic magic.

  • Review by Pete Baran ★★½

Rita Moreno perks this up, but it is a little tied up in the operetta and its plot to ever soar. Oreste isn't terrible in his only film role, he has the voice, but he is nominally the star and everyone else around him has more charisma. Curtiz holds it all together but only seems interested when the sword fighting starts, and there are no Rathbones here.

  • Review by AbandonChimp ★★

Aside from his singing voice, this Oreste guy is a washout. Also, I restate my opinion that the operetta is a genre best confined to the ashbin of history.
