PAGE 1 If you are talking about numbers or science, expect a blank stare from me. Blink. Blink. Blink. Or maybe a polite nod as I pretend to understand what you are saying, while in reality Ive mentally exited the conversation and moved on to thinking about what Im having for lunch, or dinner, or a snack, and if its too soon for a beer. Mmm beer. Blink. Blink. Blink. Where was I Oh yes, food. Im fairly simple when it comes to food. If it tastes good, Ill eat it. If it tastes bad, Ill put some sauce on it and pretend to like it (Im a nice girl). Some of you like to know where your food comes from, while I try to avoid that line of thinking completely. Recently, however, I learned a lot about meat ... and most importantly, I ate it, but more on that in a bit. I had heard things about grass-fed cattle, hormones, antibiotics, etc., but I figured, People have been eating meat forever, who cares? Meat is good. Mmm meat. I recently toured Three Suns Ranch in Punta Gorda. Its website is filled with information about its 1,800 bison and 1,100 cattle: All of our animals are grass fed, and we do not use antibiotics or growth hormones. Of course my mind wandered because there are chemicals mentioned and my brain doesnt like science. But it likes meat, so I kept reading the website and listening to owner Keith Mann. We treat these animals better than we treat our people, he said. Three Suns Ranch is located on about 6,000 acres in Eastern Charlotte County, making...

PAGE 1 I was having a steak with some friends this week and it made me think about my granddad and his freezer. Time spent with my granddad, the reverend, was always wonderful. I remember during one of my visits, the congregation gave my grandparents a huge freezer. Granddad was pastoring a church in LaBelle at the time. Most of the families in the church were farmers and ranchers. The freezer was an important thing for a pastor in a rural community. As you might assume, many in the congregation gave their offerings in the form of meat and produce. Within days of the freezers installation, it was lled with beef, ham, bacon, corn, okra and more peas than you can imagine. As a member of a working-class family, steak was a rare experience for me. My family generally ate what would be categorized as soul food today. Black-eyed peas with neck bone, rice and tomato gravy, turnips with fatback were all staples of my diet. Believe me we werent being trendy, we were living within a tight budget. We always had plenty to eat, but steak was a rare thing in our home. Suddenly granddad had every cut of meat on hand, and it didnt take me long to discover my favorite ribeye. Adding steak to our evening meals made my grandparents home truly heaven for me. Granddad was quick to remind me that this steak was available because of the blessings of God and the generosity of others. He taught me that no matter our station in life we remain dependent on the kindness and help from others...
